Diana Powell

Collaborative Divorce:
An Interview with Diana Powell

Diana Powell, Senior Counsel at Griffiths Law PC, first connected with Deb Johnson, Owner & President of Divorce Resource Centre of Colorado through the establishment of the Colorado Collaborative Divorce Professionals. She shares her impressions and experiences after working with Deb within the collaborative divorce model for nearly 20 years.
Interviewer: To start, what can you tell us about DRCC and Deb Johnson?

Diana Powell: I have known Deb as a neutral and as a party expert in many dozens of cases. Including cases where I was primary counsel, and cases where I was less directly involved as a supervising attorney.

I: What do you feel Deb’s secret sauce is?

DP: She can help both parties organize and obtain financial information, without having either party feel demeaned or excessively confused. When parties differ in their financial sophistication, she demystifies the financial information for the party who might otherwise feel too intimidated to make informed decisions.

I: Is there anything different about the agreements she helps divorcing couples arrive at?

DP: I’ve seen her develop truly win-win situations that were not merely acceptable, but maximized the position of each party. She helps them take account of a variety of tax considerations, retirement income strategies and even estate planning features. She also helps parties generate multiple realistic budget projections as they evaluate post-decree lifestyle alternatives.

I: Why do you trust Deb to contribute to your civil litigation practice?

DP: She’s quite sensitive to the emotional aspect of the divorce, and “bonds” with the client, enabling the client to have greater trust in the process and the client’s team.

Deb writes excellent well-reasoned and capably supported reports, when her role calls for that work, and she’s a reliable witness—her testimony comes from an excellent command of the data and conviction in the rectitude of her analysis. Colorado judges in several jurisdictions have specially mentioned that Deb’s report and/or testimony was important to their decisions.

I: That’s impressive! Is there anything else about her reputation that stood out to you when you first decided to work with Deb?

DP: Well first, she has served on the Board of Directors of both Colorado and national organizations, to address policy issues affecting the financial circumstances of families in divorce. Second to that, and just as importantly, she gives back to the community in ways that enhance her stature as a witness.

I: Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share about your experiences with Deb?

DP: I just cannot say enough about Deb’s skills, but the characteristic that is most important is her heart. She actually cares about each client, whether her appointment is as a neutral or as a party’s consulting or testifying expert. Deb Johnson is a seasoned professional who has avoided both burn-out and cynicism.
