Helen Thorpe

Co-Parenting & An Amicable Separation

When author and freelance journalist Helen Thorpe sought a resource to help her and her husband of 11 years achieve a respectful divorce, her marriage counselor referred her to our team.

Through our mediation processes, we were able to help the two navigate their complex situation and arrive at a meaningful co-parenting plan.

A Private, Practical Process

As with all of our clients, we began with a Mediation Consultation to share more about our process and to learn about Helen and her husband’s goals and guiding principles. As Helen put it, “The entire orientation was geared towards peaceful resolution. I felt tremendous relief.”

From there we moved into sessions where we took inventory of the couple’s finances, as well as performed a budget and cash flow analysis, helping the two divide property and plan for a future for that would be financially sound on both sides.

We were also able to create a viable situation that enhanced Helen and her ex-husband’s ability to co-parent, helping them to remain good partners in shepherding their son along the path to adulthood.

“DRCC approached our divorce as if it was more of a math problem, with less emotion, and guided us to think that way as well so that we could split our household without arguing,” Helen explained. “Deb helped me be smart about what to ask for. I would not have made some of those choices on my own; in hindsight, they were exactly the right decisions.”

A Financially Sound Future

From our first consultation to our final session, it took just seven months for Helen and her ex-husband to arrive at their divorce settlement and parenting plan. They were able to maintain a supportive relationship during and after the process. Helen was able to focus on writing and publishing two more non-fiction books.

“I feel incredibly grateful to Deb Johnson and her entire staff for making one of the most difficult experiences in my life much much easier, and for the happiness I now enjoy, thanks to their guidance during a very confusing phase in my life.”
